In-Class Task:Hypertext & Hypermedia
Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India, on October 2nd 1869. His father died when he was still a teenager. At the age of 13 he married Kasturba Gandhi who was three years younger and the marriage lasts for 62 years until her death in 1944.
As a young man Gandhi left India to study law in London. Then he spent two decades working in South Africa securing rights for Indian expatriates. It was during this time that his political reform through non-violence which he called Satyagraha was born. This movement meant resistance of tyranny through mass civil disobedience, firmly founded upon ahimsa, total non violence, which led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. This way, when he returned to India, Mohandas Gandhi emerged as a political and religious leader in the fight for independence from Great Britain and was accorded the country's Father of the Nation. India freed itself from Britain on August 15th, 1947. Five months later, on January 25th, 1948 Gandhi was shot by a conservative Hindu.

Website- http://www.teachenglishinasia.net/tefl-tesl-games-and-activities-directory
1- Who are the users of the website/websites is/are targeting?
The website is targeting users from all range of age. From adult to elementary school, this website provides with a lot of activities for the users to choose from. Basically, this website serves as a medium for the users to choose how to conduct their own activities or games in learning English language. This is because this website provides with a lot of links for the users to choose in searching for the suitable activities or games to begin with. For example, there's a link to “Middle School English Games”, the user will be directed to another page where there's a lot of activities that can be choose from. For example, games like “Words in Word”, “Word Challenge”, “Typhoon” and etc. The users will have just to follow instructions given by the website in delivering/conducting the activities/games. As mentioned before, this website provides with a lot of examples in conducting activities and games for all range of age, and the user can fully use this website as a medium in learning/teaching English language.
2- What sorts of things are the application users expected to do with regards to learning and using (or even manipulating) the content?
Users are expected to use the website as a medium in searching for the appropriate activities or games that can be used in teaching/learning English language. The users will just have to choose the suitable activities and can follow all the suggested activities that can be used in the classroom or even for self-learning. Users can alter the contents/suggested activities given by the website in making the activities or games suitable for the students. Basically, this website is a medium for the students/teachers to have ideas about suitable activities or games in learning/teaching English language.
3- What sorts of computers skills are the application users expected to have in order to operate/access/use the application?
Users are expected to have just basic skills in accessing the website. Basic skills like clicking and exploring the website are required. Basically, the users will have just to do simple browsing through the links provided in searching for the suitable activities and games. The users can manipulate the content (to make the activities and games to be suitable in meeting up the intended learning process) in browsing through this website. Apart from that, I don't think another computer skills are needed.
4- While you are “playing”/”accessing”/”assessing” the website, does it remind you of anything you do (or have done) in a classroom, or with a teacher, or with a fellow classmate, or in self-study?
Yes, it does. Some of the activities, like “Word Challenge”, do remind me on some of the activities that my teacher did back in my schooling years. It not exactly like what is mentioned in the website, but the similarities are there. Some of the activities/games are also have been used by today's teachers. Yes, it does remind me on some of the activities and games that had been done by my ex-teachers.
5- What setting will the website best used in: independent study lab with no teacher available, lab associated with a class, a teacher-led class with one or few computers?
The website is best used in a teacher-led class with one or few computers. Maybe. In my opinion, this website is not “that” suitable for the students to explore it by themselves. They need to be pushed around in making them to do the suggested activities/games provided by the website. The teacher will have to monitor the students progress and to make sure that they carry out the activities/games provided by the website. If they let to be independently carry out the activities/games, I'm sure that most of them will not do the activities/games suggested.
6- Can you pinpoint some theories of language learning and/or teaching underlying the application?
Probably by giving a lot of activities/games(FUN activities and FUN games), the students will become more anticipated in learning the language. The teacher can give all of the suggested activities/games in making the teaching-learning process to be more meaningful. Scaffolding is necessary too, I think.
7- How well are the Vygotsky's constructivist theory of learning and Gardner's Multiple Intelligence theory applied to the chosen website?
Since this website provides with a lot of activities/games for individual usage, Vygotsky's constructivist theory is not much applied. Self-initiated learning is required. For Gardner's Multiple Intelligence theory, probably some Interpersonal (since the teacher will have to communicate with the students in delivering the suggested activities/games) and probably Verbal-Linguistic since it involves with language learning.
8- In 1980s and early 1990s, there was a major debate on 'whether the computer was “master” of or “slave” to the learning process (Higgins and Johns, 1984). In relation to your evaluation- is the computer a replacement for teachers, or merely an obedient servants to students?
In my opinion, I think the computer is not a replacement for teachers since all the suggested activities/games will require teacher's supervision and guidance as well. Teacher is still relevant in this context and the computer is not merely a “master” nor “slave”. Probably computer is a helper in helping the teacher in delivering good lessons to the students. Teacher's guidance is still needed and the computer should not be a replacement for teachers. Students can also learn by using the computer but the computer should not be their major part in learning. Probably, the computer can be their helper too in making them to be more self-initiated learners, but with the guidance of the teachers.
9- Would you like to use the website yourself in your future work?
Definitely YES. Since I am becoming a teacher (hopefully), I will definitely will be using this website as my resource in searching for the right activities/games. So that my lessons will be not that boring and dull. I don't believe in traditional method of teaching (teacher-centered), so I will make sure that my lesson will be fun, and this website sure do provides me with a lot of fun activities/games for me to choose from in making my lesson to be more interesting.
10- Suggestions/recommendation.
Since the website is well-organized, I don't think any suggestions/ recommendation are necessary. All categories (target students, language skills, suitable games and etc) are well organized in the website. All you have to do is just click and explore each links in order to find the most suitable activities/games that you want to use. I want to recommend this website to all of the teachers, teachers-to-be, and as well as trainee teachers out there. It is good in making your lesson to be more interesting.
